Many people ask me: what is there to know about juicers? A lot! Is what I generally reply to the uninitiated. If you’re reading this guide you’ve probably stumbled upon the great variety of juicers and are looking for a little guidance on which juicer to buy.

This guide helps you through the process, step by step. While juicing is certainly not for everybody I know from experience that it’s at least worth a try – if you’re really looking to improve your health and/or need to control your weight.

However, let me mention one thing right from the start: juicing is no miracle wonder do-it-all diet. There is a little more to become lean and healthy and stay that way your whole life than drinking a glass of juice – I think you know that already but I needed to get this off my chest. That being sad, let’s get started.

Juicing has become a major trend throughout the world over the past few years. This healthy way to ingest fruits and vegetables is taking the health industry (and the average Joe) by storm.

Trainers, athletes, professionals and families alike have begun to juice everything from kale to apples to carrot in an effort to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

As an alternative to buying drinks from a juice bar or café, more and more consumers are purchasing juicers for their homes so they can take advantage of all of what juicing has to offer on a daily basis at a more reasonable cost.

But the venture into juicing can be an overwhelming one from picking a juicer to drinking the first thing you’ve created yourself. I’m  here to welcome you to this world of juicing and provide you with valuable information for every step of your journey.

Certainly, juicing is not for everybody. While I highly recommend you try it out for yourself, I think I can give you some guidance whether or not juicing is for you. Over the last years, I had many clients in my personal fitness coaching with various backgrounds – so I know more or less which type of guy or gal will benefit from including a juice regimen into their diet or workouts.

  • People who might benefit from juicing
  • If you're having a hard time meeting your daily needs of vegetables and fruits juicing can come to your rescue
  • If you have kids and they absolutely dislike veggies you can try giving them fresh juice. Works wonders if you add an apple, too.
  • You feel like you've lost your energy due to bad eating habits and you'd like to start detoxing.
  • You have previously sticked to a health regimen for at least 3 months.
  • People who won't benefit from juicing
  • If you absolutely need to lose weight (juicing MAY help you with your diet, but there is much more to losing weight than juicing)
  • You don't have much time to eat anyway. Juicing takes time: shopping for groceries, preparing them, cleaning the juicer etc.
  • You tend to eat a lot fruits and vegetables already (juicing may be an overkill for you)
  • You only like fruits (you'll most definitely juice too much and consume too much fructose)

There are five different types of juicers to choose from: centrifugal, masticating, triturating, hydraulic press and citrus press. You might be saying to yourself, I don’t know what any of this means. Don’t worry – I’ll explain!

After discussing and reviewing the different types of juicers we’ll also talk about the brands that are on the market for purchase and what to look for in the right juicer. Deciding what type of juicer you want will make the researching and purchasing processes much easier.

The Centrifugal Juicer

The most common juicer on the market right now is the centrifugal juicer. To use this model, you would place the fruits or vegetables down a chute into a basket with tiny teeth that spins. The teeth with grind the food into a soft texture while it spins.

Then, because it is spinning so fast the juice will be extracted from the solid food and drained out of the juicer into a cup. The leftover pieces of the fruits and vegetables end up in a pulp dispenser so they can be thrown away or used for another purpose.

  • Good option if you're just starting out and don't know if juicing is right for you

  • Fairly inexpensive

The Masticating Juicer

A masticating juicer works a little bit different from both these other juicers. In this machine, food is pushed into a chute that has a slow-moving blade powered by a motor. Instead of spinning the food, it is “chewed” into mush then pushed down to release the juice.

Mesh located underneath the tube ensures that solid food easily separates from juice. It’s important to note that unlike the commonly used centrifugal juicers, these kind can also make baby food, smoothies, purees and raw nut butter. These machines are often called cold press juicers as well.

There are plenty of masticating juicer types: you could buy a horizontal masticating juicer or a vertical model which is a little easier to feed.

The Triturating Juicer

Two gears (twin-gear), instead of one, gets you the triturating juicer. Twin-gear action rotates inward with a tiny gap for grinding and pulverizing fruits and veggies. Throughout this process, the juice is released and collected.

The gears rotate slowly so the structure of the cells is not disrupted and oxidized. Soft produce can easily be juiced in this type of device but harder vegetables like carrots can be challenging as food has to be pushed into the machine.

A variety of attachments are available for this type of juicer including pulp output controls or a pasta-making spout. You will get more juice from your produce when using a twin-gear, triturating juicer than if you use a one-gear, masticating juicer.

The Hydraulic Press Juicer

A hydraulic press juicer is often overlooked when discussing the options that are valuable on the market. Some devices can work without electricity. Some models can be manually operated so there is less complications and necessities for juicing.

You simply grind up fruits and vegetables in a blender and wrap them in the provided juice cloth. The cloth is then put in a stainless steel tray. This tray is is compressed and the cloth separate the juicer from the pulp. Upon compression, the trays are locked and the produce is juiced.

One classic example of a hydraulic press juicer is the famous Norwalk juicer. This one comes with a hefty price tag, though. Be prepared to whip out more than $2,000 for the Norwalk.

What Makes A Good Juicer?

Which type of juicer you decide to buy is solely up to you. It should be the kind that you find easiest to use and clean. It should also be in your budget and have all the features you want. Most importantly, it has to be a machine you know you will use.

Machines that are hard to clean or too big allow for excuses to get in the way of usage. Make it easy on yourself by buying a juicer that fits your lifestyle and health needs. As some general rules of thumb when you go juicer shopping is to make sure that the machine can juice all types of fruits and vegetables, from hard to soft.

A low speed juicer is better than high speed because it will minimize oxidation and therefore produce a juice that lasts longer and tastes better. Functionally, the best kinds of juicers will be easy to clean and have a low noise level.
